What Are Scam Websites and How Can You Avoid Them?

Scam websites are common these days. These are everywhere in the digital world. Most of these websites are well-designed so that you can’t easily spot if it’s fake or legitimate. Thus, it is a must that you are well aware of what are the key factors to determine a scam website so you won’t be a victim of any malicious activities.

How does a scam website work?

There are tons of ways how a scam website works. It could be in the form of rewards, raffles, and other promising and misleading information. These are all for a financial exchange. These strategies, most especially when money is involved, can easily attract and lure unaware people. Once the target is lured, they can easily execute their goal to get your personal and financial information.

You can’t underestimate these scam websites as they are well-planned and strategically laid out. These fraud websites could appear as standalone, unauthorized overlays, and pop-ups

There are three basic strategies for how these fraudulent websites deceive their targets.

  1. Lure – As stated earlier, these websites will first create bait for their targets to redirect them to their distribution channels or scam websites. Most of the time, there will be pop-ups that you won in a raffle with a certain amount of money or a prize. So, even when you didn’t join any raffle since it’s free, you’ll still get interested.
  2. Compromise – This would be the next step. Since the target was lured and redirected to the scam website, their personal information and the device used will be compromised and easily detected by the fraudsters.
  3. Perform – Once the target’s information has been compromised, the scammers can easily perform their end goal. To get the private and financial information of their target or to inflict a virus on their target’s device.

How can these scam websites be avoided?

Most probably, we have all encountered a scam website, but there are still times that these websites might confuse us, and that’s how we get victimized by their malicious intentions. So, how can we avoid and detect these websites?

1. Use a website checker.

Website checkers are online tools that can be used to determine if a website is real or fake. A good example you can use is is Legit. It evaluates a site’s trust score, blocklists, HTTPS connection, and other metrics to determine a website’s legitimacy. Simply input the URL you want to check, and the tool will do the rest.

2. Determine if it has a low-quality website design.

Most of the time, fraud websites are poorly designed. There is a low resolution of images and weird layouts. That’s because they may be done hastily and without employing a professional.

3. Look at the grammar.

Aside from having a low-quality design, scam websites contain poor grammar or obvious misspelled words.

4. Is It too good to be true?

If you are being redirected to a website that’s offering you a huge prize or saying that you won something, you should be alarmed. This is a common strategy that scammers use to trick people into divulging personal information such as bank details and addresses.

Final Words

It’s unfortunate that many scammers use online tricks to get money or information. The internet has definitely made things easier for things like shopping and purchasing, but it’s also easy for scammers to penetrate. As such, make sure you’re taking extra precautions when transacting anything online.
