How to Organize a Home Office

If you’re working from home, having an organized home office can help keep you focussed and make you more productive. From managing paperwork to storing important documents and files, there are many elements to consider, but a smoothly run workspace can save you time and save you from distractions.

Here are a few tips to consider when organizing and decluttering your home office:

1. Start With the Essentials:

Having clutter around you while you’re working can be massively distracting, so before you begin sorting and organising, assess what you really need to keep and what can be thrown away. Go through all of your papers, office supplies and any other bits and bobs, and decide which are essential. Do you need so many pens? Are any of the cables redundant? Will you ever use the post-its? If not, let go of them, and think about only what you need to or want to keep to make your office space function the way you’d like it to.

2. Create Zones:

Whether you have a large space, or just a desk, it’s important to create zones so that you can always find what you need and, almost more importantly, so you know where to put things when it comes to tidying up. Think about how you use the space in your office. What do you need to grab on a daily basis, what do you only need once in a while? Using your chair as the centre of your world, work outwards according to those priorities and create zones for your different categories.

3. Create a Proper Filing System:

Most office set ups don’t rely on too much paperwork anymore, but it’s still a good idea to get ahead of it and create a robust paper management system. Set up two systems: one for short term actions, which can be as simple as an intray or magazine file, and one for long-term reference.

For long-term filing, use suspension folders and labels to create categories for everything you need to keep. Pro tip: don’t over categorise. It’s easier to remember where things are if you have broad categories than a million micro categories

4. Cable Management:

Cables can create a lot of visual clutter, and can make life harder when you can’t tell what’s what. Attach labels to the cables so you can quickly grab the right one, and use a cable tidy box to contain the tangle and keep the space feeling calmer and clear.

5. Add Storage Space:

If you don’t have enough room to store everything you want to keep, get more storage. If you can’t fit more storage, it’s time to reconsider what you legitimately need to keep.

Following these steps will help you create a clutter-free and organized home office and help you feel more in control and productive.
