View Full Version : Deja Office for Android - Timeline?

Greetings -

I apologize if this information is posted somewhere on the web site, but I did perform a few searches and was not able to locate anything.

My question is in regard to the release date of Deja Office for the Android operating system. Is there even a tentative date being thrown around? I purchased a Motorola Droid from Verizon Wireless a month or so ago and love the phone, but the built in PIM functionality is frankly primitive when compared with my Treo 755P running the Garnet Palm OS. I feel as if I have taken a huge leap forward in phone technology, only to take a staggeringly large series of steps backwards in my ability to perform even simple PIM tasks required for my daily schedule.

Also, as I am sure many others have done, if you are looking for BETA testers for Deja Office on the Android platform I would be more than happy to lend my services!

Hi BamBam,

Welcome to the forums! Your situation is not uncommon - DejaOffice was designed to replace much of the lost functionality from your old Treo. We are getting very close to releasing DejaOffice for Android. I don't have an exact date yet, but it should be available within the next 30 days. I'll be sure to send you an email when it's ready!

Kaena -

Thanks for the information. I am looking forward to checking out the Daja Office suite when it becomes available for the Android platform with the sincere hope that it will truly replace the seamless functionality I lost when I migrated off of the Palm platform. I look forward to receiving your email when the product is available.

Kaena and BamBam, The Current release of CL USB Sync has nearly all the features of DejaOffice. We've been doing the development under a different name. At this point, our biggest mission is simply to find whether we can re-name that app in the App Marketplace.

CL USB Sync has Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Memos, Today View and Categories. What's missing is Expenses. We just put a new release up today (Saturday April 24) and it has a series of small improvements. We will shortly be updating the CompanionLink Sync side with a substantial increase in speed, cutting Re-Sync speed for an average Outlook database under 30 seconds.

So Check out CL USB Sync in the Android App Marketplace. It's the Pre-DejaOffice release, and it's available right now.

OK, that changes things a bit from my perspective. I was under the impression that Deja Office was going to be an entirely different product rather than simply a re-name from the current CL USB Sync application (which I use now). If this is the case, and the final product for Deja Office is essentially what I have now, then I must admit that I am rather disappointed. While the CL USB Sync application has bridged the gap between my Android phone and my PC by providing basic sync functionality, there is still (for me) a rather large laundry list of items that I would like to see implemented in the final version of Deja Office before it would be at the point where I would consider it a one-to-one replacement for my old Treo PIM functionality.

Some examples of changes/fixes I would like to see:

1) Calendar event alerts are unreliable and often do not go off at all. Example: I frequently have anywhere from 4-10 events on my calendar every day for work, virtually all of which have an alert associated with them. I have found that more often than not, none of the alerts will sound throughout the day when they are supposed to - however, when I sync the device to my PC at home or if I manually add a new calendar event for that day, all previous event alerts will suddenly sound all at once (sometimes 15-20 at a time) for events that occurred days before. This is obviously troubling since I rely on these alerts for important work events, and the fact that I now can no longer do so since the alerts have proven unreliable is a growing problem. I have nearly missed several important appointments due to the simple fact that the reminder alarms have not gone off when they should have.

2) Ability to edit recurring events on the Android device. The current application has been stating "Editing of recurring events coming soon" since I first tried the product several months ago.

3) Recurring events do not always continue to appear at the designated interval after the current iteration is cleared. Example: I have a recurring task reminder to pay one of my credit cards on a specific date each month. I made the payment and cleared the entry from the "Today" list last month, but the item was completely removed from my task list both on the device and the desktop. I did not delete it, I simply cleared the current event which should have forced the next month's iteration to populate automatically.

4) The recent change to the "Today" screen to not display completed events was a welcome change, but I have noticed for some time that the "Today" screen does not properly refresh itself after completing or changing an item. Example: I modified the date on a task item earlier today (with the new update release in place), saved the change and was returned to the "Today" screen where the old date was still displayed. I then hit the "Back" button to return to the main menu, then hit "Today" again and at that point the updated date was displayed. I have noticed this behavior in multiple screens throughout the application.

5) Task and calendar reminders should be "snoozable". On the Palm, when an event triggers an alert the option to either snooze the alarm or clear it is offered each time. Also, the ability to define the default snooze duration would be nice.

6) Event reminders that are not acknowledged immediately should force a "Reminder" chirp of some kind every few minutes, then re-sound the alert after the default "snooze" period has passed to ensure that the event is noticed and acknowledged.

7) Categories have been a problem for me since day one. Although they do now transfer from the host PC, the color coding on many categories keeps getting changed back to gray regardless of how often I define a different color.

8) When changing the color of a category (see #7), calendar events are not automatically updated to the new color. The only way I have been able to make this occur is to open each event and then re-save it to update it to the new color coding.

9) The ability to filter tasks by additional criteria like "Next 7 days", "Last 7 days", "Past due" and "No due date" would be a nice addition.

10) Add the ability to force a reminder to occur a specific amount of time after a specific event has been completed. This is useful when follow-up calls or visits are necessary and does not require the creation of a new event to clutter up the task list.

11) Add birthdays as a field for contacts, and populate the birthday entry on the calendar with a definable reminder alert.

I could probably come up with quite a few more ideas, but this is probably a good example for my "wish list" items that I would like to see implemented. If some or all of these items are currently under construction for the future release, that's great. However, if there are no plans to increase the functionality to include items like these then I will unfortunately have to look elsewhere for a PIM solution. I will be honest and say that I have considered going back to the Treo simply for the PIM software. It would be a huge step backwards in terms of device functionality overall and software availability, but in the end what is important is that the device provide the specific features and tools I need to help me perform my job.

Thanks for listening. I would certainly welcome the opportunity (if you are interested) to provide additional input or work with your development group to perform testing of future versions. From reading I have done on many other websites I know I am not alone in looking for some or all of the items I detailed above, so I know they would be welcome additions to your product if they were included in a future revision.

Thanks.

That's a great list. I put all those items in the development queue. You should see action on them quickly. Many are already on my list, especially trying to make alerts more persistent. The release last Saturday should have helped that some.

If you think of more things, please list them. I'll try to put up a roadmap post this week to give the overall vision of the project. We are focused on knocking out the smaller cosmetic issues fast, but also have some very broad goals in our sights.

Actually, one cosmetic item I forgot to mention was in the edit screen for a task. I noticed in one of the recent updates that the date field directly below the "Due Date" checkbox only displays the top portion of the box. The bottom section and most of the text is not visible. It still works properly if you tap it, but visually it looks odd.

Got it! Thanks so much for the detailed notes.

We are planning a release for Wed May 5. I think about half these items will be in it. The rest got deferred down the road just a little bit.

Hi! I just bought and installed the DejaOffice for android today (5/5/10) and I'd like to request a few features.

1) In the today screen, organize the task portion by the same sorting rules as the task app. I use sort by "Due Date, Priority" in the tasks app, but in the today screen it shows up as alphabetical.

2) Color the arrows for priority (red = high, clear=none, green=low) in tasks & today.

3) In the today screen, provide left & right arrows (or some other appropriate control) to scroll to the next day. I love being able to see all tasks & calendar items for a day, but often need to look ahead at both simultaneously.

Thanks!

Hi. Just joined after being directed here by sales support at CompanionLink. I have a new Verizon Droid Incredible that comes with some useful HTC widgets, and I'd sent her a note about the minor but irritating difficulty with easily accessing the calendar after syncing from Outlook and not being able to use the widgets. She suggested that DejaOffice might help. Sure looks like it might. Except that unlike Russ in the prior message, I can't seem to find the link to download it and try it. Is it still in beta?

Thanks -

Kvedt, I'm sorry for the confusion.

We've changed the title both yesterday and today. Somehow this has fouled up the search mechanism this morning. Google also had a prominent Calendar outage this morning. We don't know if these events are related, but we suspect some sort of large scale outage with Google. The Calendar outage was fixed within 30 minutes. Google has multiple server farms, so our experience is that fixes can sometimes take 4-8 hours to propagate, if that is the right word.

I'm testing on my phone now.

Try searching for "USB". DejaOffice is #1 on my phone.

"Outlook" DejaOffice comes in #3 on my phone

"Deja" comes in at #2.

It looks to be good. This is 9:30 Pacific Time on May 6, 2010.

We also always host a direct link on this page, for people who can't access the Marketplace for any reason. You can email this link to your phone, then tap on it, browse the page, and tap on the green button. This will install the software without the marketplace:

Pete,

I got it as an update to CL USB Sync that I had already downloaded. It appeared in the Market app (comes with the phone - I have the Incredible too). You should be able to find it there. If you can only find CL USB Sync, then use the aTrackDog app to check for updates.

Ah ha. Yes, I saw an update a few hours ago and shazam...it's now DejaOffice. One item of confusion - since I purchased CompanionLink Express, does this mean that I do not need to "upgrade" to DejaOffice? This is the same product but a new release with more features?

A question as well: I selected to sync both with your apps and with the calendar and contact apps native to the phone. That worked fine. But it appears that edits made on the phone do not necessarily sync. Is the sync one way? I'm not referring to the choice of sync type in the setup program on my PC, but rather to any edits, adds or deletes I make on the phone. Same question for the calendar - if I edit, add or delete an entry on the Android calendar, will that propagate back to your calendar app and the sync to the PC?

Thanks, and sorry about the granularity of the question, but I'm a recent adopter of this particular technology.

I have noticed this as well. Particularly with tasks. If I delete them on the android, they often still appear in Outlook after a sync. Add that to the list of fixes please!

Yes. Both DejaOffice (DJO) and CompanionLink Express (CLX) are evolving rapidly to meet the growth and changes with Android phones. For those who have purchased CLX, the updates are free. Indeed CLX will gain a new look and version number (CompanionLink v4) in the next month. This is a free upgrade for anyone who purchased since January 2009 (17 months ago).

Ruh Oh. Sounds like a bug to me. It is SUPPOSED to go two ways. All edits on the phone should sync back to PC. I'll check it out in the morning to see what I'm getting. If there is a problem we may do a quick re-post on Monday. Our next scheduled release should be mid-week, although I may delay it a week depending on, well, whether it works.

And I just noticed late last night that after syncing with my PC, all the alarms go off when it's done....

I have the same thing happening, though in my case the alarm does go off. But all of the old recurrent reminders (e.g., birthdays), but not old one-time reminders (e.g. an appointment), go off again after synching with my PC. I can dismiss all on the phone and they'll stay off until the next time I sync, then they go off again as soon as the phone re-accesses the SD card.

In case you were still looking at this, I seem to be able to sync in both directions without any problem. I figured out that I had not only to setup the application to sync in both directions, but to make sure that Outlook was not the primary database as well. Now adds and deletes work fine. So no bug, just not as clear as it might have been, which you could address with a simple sentence in the setup tab about synching both directions (e.g. "Note: If you want to sync deletes as well as adds and changes, select 'Both' under the Primary Database tab." Or something like that.

Thanks.

Kvedt, for recurring event alarms ringing after a sync. We've found and fixed it. You will need a new CompanionLink Update from this page:

http://www.companionlink.com/downloads/updates.html

Please wait until you see an update with today's date. It is still in QA at the moment.

Would love to purchase CompanionLink (CL), but it and DejaOffice (DO) are not ready for prime time. I depend on Outlook (OL) appointments for my business (for tracking billable time) and literally cannot afford to lose appointments; after setting up for trial access, revamping workflow for limitations of the software, and running for 10 days, the last synch dropped recently-added appointments. Thank God I suspected as much and backed up the calendar, but now must copy appointments back and sort through double entries - LARGE PITA, and one dissatisfied frustrated potential customer here.

Would reconsider the product pair if:

1) DO handled mutliple categories - my customer billing depends on these

2) Completed tasks transferred along with uncompleted ones

3) Bluetooth sync was implemented as has been promised

I echo other posts here in that I'm very disappointed having lost OL sync moving from Palm Treo to Droid, and appreciate your efforts to fill the gap.

Thank you.

I've been checking and the CL Express update is still build 3095. Should I be downloading and installing the update that says CL for webOS build 3096? Or is that different? Obviously I don't want to lose the functionality of my CL Express and DejaOffice.

Sorry if I'm being dense or too literal, but I've learned to be cautious over the years.

Hi,

Just registered yesterday, thanks for providing a forum. Overall, I like the product. Thanks for giving business users a good tool to use with Outlook and Droid.

I also have had issues with multiple, very old alarms after each sync. I just downloaded and installed build 3096, hoping this would provide a fix after reading the forum. No luck.

Also, I have a calendar request. The font is really, really small on my droid in one day view.

Alan, welcome to the forums

b3096 was supposed to be the silver bullet. Please accept my apology. I'll share it with the tech team. It's relatively quick for us to do a PC update so look for one tomorrow.

Fonts are here! I'm looking at better fonts on my phone tonight. Still a long way to go. We are refitting fonts, and fot selections into about 22 different screens. I'm very agreed that the Calendar fonts are a sheer exercise in screen resolution. In the first pass on fonts, a lot of text doesn't fit or wraps oddly. I can tell there is a lot for the team to fix up. I'm hoping for Wed May 19 or so. I'll keep everyone posted here.

After playing around with the latest update for DejaOffice 1.3.3 I have found several small issues that have carried over from the CL USB version I used previously, so I figured I would list them here to see if they are on the radar:

1) On the "DejaToday" screen, if I tap a task then hit the "Complete" button to clear the task, when I return to the "DejaToday" screen the "Events" bar moved up one line and actually displays the most current calendar event as a task. Everything below the "Events" bar remains in the proper order. I have been able to replicate this issue numerous times. Leaving and then re-entering the screen will resolve the problem.

2) Color-coding for categories still seems be dropping color selections for some categories after a sync. I can re-set them, then they will revert to the default gray color some time during the next few syncs.

3) Alarms - these seem to be hit or miss for calendar events. For quite a few days none of my alarms were working at all, then randomly last week they began to work almost normally (these are for the same recurring events I have on my calendar every week). So far this week, they are back to not working most of the time. Also, I have the same problem someone else reported where every time I sync Droid back to my PC I receive somewhere between 15-20 alarms for events that are weeks old.

4) Recurring calendar events do not show color coding in the "DejaToday" screen. Non-recurring events show the proper color coding.

5) Tasks - The due date line for all tasks is still showing up as half-height, so in most cases I cannot read the due date on this screen and must view the summary for the item to see the date.

That's it for now. I am encouraged to see that many issues have already been addressed, but am still hoping that future releases will include much more of the Palm-like functionality, specifically around the behavior of reminders and tasks.

Hi Eric and Wayland. I downloaded the CompanionLink Express update build 3096 today, and the problem of old recurrent alarms reappearing is still there, just as it was when I posted last week. I noticed that Alan reported the same thing a few posts up from this one. I'm using DejaOffice 1.3.3, CompanionLink Express w/ update build 3096. Using it on a Verizon HTC Incredible running android 2.1 w/ update1. So that's too bad, though a minor annoyance at worst.

The good news is that an earlier problem I was having - the DejaOffice shortcuts I'd place on my home screen always taking me to whatever DejaOffice application I used first - has gone away. I know from an earlier response that you weren't able to duplicate that problem, but it remained a consistent one for me until the update to CLX. So thanks for that.

Russ, the date picker widget will be revised soon. It will be a month view with single tap selection. However, this widget by itself is probably several days work. Probably in June/July. The current date picker (native Android date picker) is functional.

I'll have the team run through alarms and the today screen again.

We will probably do another update this week.

BamBam, we've tested what you found with the new build of DejaOffice (version 1.4.0). Everything seems to be working now!

Items #1 and #2 from the list you quoted in your message are still not working properly for me with version 1.4.0. Specifically, I am still seeing the formatting error with the DejaTasks screen, and my color coding has been dropped several more times during a sync since installing the update.

After upgrading to version 1.4.0 yesterday, I also discovered another issue: specifically, when viewing tasks and I tap the menu button and choose the "Complete" option, the task is not marked as complete. I tested this numerous times today and in each instance, the task I tapped "Complete" on was left on my open task list. When I tapped the task, opened the task using "Edit" and checked the "Is Complete" checkbox, the item would then be marked complete and removed from the active tasks. Anyone else notice this change in behavior? The "Complete" button was working for me in the previous release.

I am running the 1.4.1 update and am still experiencing a few issues:

(previously reported 05/13)

2) Tasks do not sync consistently with my Palm desktop. If I mark a task as completed on the handheld, it is hit or miss if the desktop will get updated. Items marked as complete on the desktop typically sync to the device properly. I have verified that I have bi-directional sync enabled for all changes and deletions.

3) When opening the calendar, it still occasionally defaults to December, 1969 as the current date. This is random and cannot be reproduced consistently.

4) Recurring events keep disappearing. I can create a recurring event on the desktop (since this functionality is not yet available in the mobile app), sync it to the device, confirm it is there and yet some time during the next few weeks after the event has been acknowledged on each recurrence (typically once per week) the event disappears completely. I have not been able to determine a pattern to this.

Thanks.

I have a new update to report (I have version 1.5.6). I recently traveled and drove from mountain time zone into pacific time zone. As soon as I changed into PT, all my tasks and calendar items changed to being scheduled one day earlier than they were! How frustrating for scheduling! Thankfully, they all changed back on the drive home, but this should definitely be fixed.

I just downloaded 1.5.7 and now my calendar app takes 30 seconds to load (used to be instantanious). Can this be fixed as it's not usable anymore....

Russ, this will be fixed promptly, like by tomorrow... What phone exactly are you using? We're seeing the problem only in certain models.

Guid this is being fixed, but it is subject to Apple approval. Count on build 1.1.1 being available in about a week.

I'm using a Droid Incredible. It's really getting out of hand. Calendar items are being duplicated each time I sync too. And editing tasks takes forever upon saving.
