View Full Version : Why is 1.1.4 so slow to load contacts? (ACT!-->iPhone 3G via WiFi)

I was looking forward to 1.1.4 so my alarms would work (which they now do).

I read about some users with my setup having syncing problems (duplication of records), so I always purge my iPhone and load all records from ACT!, which I treat as my master repository. (That's also what I did, for a similar reason, between ACT! and my Treo 650, using Palm's sync capability before I got my iPhone.)

Looking at messages displayed on the iPhone, transfer of records between ACT! and the iPhone appears to be at the same speed as with 1.1.3. However, each batch of 200 contacts spends a huge amount of time in the "Finalize Contacts" phase. As a result, syncing now takes 3 to 4 times as long as it did with 1.1.3.

Under 1.1.3 I could complete the operation (2,000+ contacts) in about 15 minutes, which is easy to work around. Now the process takes 45-60 minutes, which is awkward, at best.

I suspect that the increased time is the result of added capabilities that I do not use. I will appreciate anything you can do to reduce the time back to 15 minutes (or even less, which would be great).

So glad your alarms are working now.
Does the 45 Min sync time occur on every sync, or just when you Purge and Reload?
We just released DJO to 1.1.5 today. Can you please let us know if you have the same slow sync experience with the latest version?
Also please check for updates for the CompanionLink desktop client.

not going to happen unless you use usb. you have to remember wifi is bound to encounter more issues than usb.

1. The only variable was the 1.1.4 upgrade. Before that, WiFi was acceptable. (I will check out 1.1.5 and the latest CompanionLink desktop.)

2. I'd be pleased to go USB instead of WiFi. When I looked at the available products for directly syncing ACT! and iPhone, I thought WiFi was the only option. If there there is some way to use USB, please let me know how to find it.

I always Purge and Reload. The time is closer to 60 minutes.

I upgraded to latest DJO and CL desktop. No improvement in times.

I watched closely and observed the following. (Unfortunately, I did no detailed observing of 1.1.3 like the following, so I can't identify, for certain, where the difference is.)

Purge takes about 10 minutes, but CL reading of Act contacts is quick. CL sends batches of 200 contacts to iPhone. First batch takes about 1 minute to transfer and about 1 minute to Finalize. The last batch of 200 takes about 2 1/2 minutes to transfer and about 5 minutes to Finalize. (Then there are the last few contacts and my calendar events, which go quickly.)

So I gather that as the number of contacts grows, the indexing process slows down. My iPhone appears to have lots of free memory: 6.7 of 6.9 GB.

I probably would be willing to give up some indexing / search capabilities in exchange for a much faster sync.

A purge and reload is a very useful way to sync after upgrading the DJO software, but should not be necessary on every sync.
Can you please post a log file from a Purge and Reload sync so we can take a closer look at what is happening here?
After you post a log file from your current sync try changing your ComapnionLink Settings to the following:
Select ACT Settings>Applications
For contacts select Act to iPhone option.
This will set your contacts to push one way from ACT to the iPhone only when you sync, and should take less time than a Purge and Reload.

I did a Purge and Reload. There's a gigantic log file on my iPhone, but when I chose to e-mail the log file, all that was sent was:

The low memory error (which I saw and cleared on my iPhone) apparently was caused by logging; it did not occur previously.

ANOTHER PROBLEM: On 1/11 I wrote that 1.1.4 fixed the alerts-not-working problem. It appears that the problem is back (perhaps in 1.1.5?). Alerts synced from ACT! do not sound, and neither do alerts that I put directly into DJO.

We just re-verified that alerts are working with 1.1.6 in ACT.
It is possible to Sync via USB if you go from ACT to Outlook to USB sync with iTunes.
We also offer Secure Hosted Sync Service. You can sign up for a free trial run of that service as well.
I posted some basic WiFi troubleshooting steps this morning you might want to check out as well.

Keep us informed of your progress.

Where are the WiFi troubleshooting steps?

Where are the WiFi troubleshooting steps?

I would try some of the following troubleshooting steps:
1. Verify the IP address does not begin with 169. This would indicate a problem with
2. You can also try resetting all network settings:
A. Go to Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings
NOTE: This will reset ALL network settings, including 3G radio and cell. If they are speaking on the iPhone when they do this, the call will drop! This will also delete all saved WiFi profiles and passwords. Make note that this data loss is acceptible prior to executing this step.
B.Go back to Settings/Wi-Fi and reconnect to your network
3. Make sure the IP address entered in CL matches the IP address reported by DJO on the device.
a) Open CompanionLink Setup/Settings/WiFi Settings
b) In DJO, go to the ?Sync? mini-app. The IP address of the iPhone/iPad should be listed in the middle of the sync screen.
c) Verify CompanionLink shows the same IP address as DJO.
4. Kill and restart the DejaOffice process (only possible on iOS 4 and higher).
a) Exit DejaOffice.
b) Double-tap the iPhone/iPad Home button. This should bring up the iPhone/iPad process manager (under the dock).
c) In the process manger, tap and hold the DejaOffice icon until it starts wiggling, then tap the "-" symbol, on the corner of the icon, to kill the DejaOffice process.
d) Restart DejaOffice and attempt to sync from the PC again.
5. If the PC is connected via WiFi, try disconnecting, then reconnecting the PC to the network. (Or restarting the PC)

Alerts are working, but I have uncovered two bugs:

1. For quite some time, I have had a recurring ACT! meeting - Monday / Wednesday / Friday every week at 7 am with an alarm one hour before. The meeting transfers to DJO and says that it has an alert one hour before, but the alert does not actually sound. (Alerts for single-occurrence events work.)

2. Several weeks ago, I set an ACT! meeting for this morning with an alarm. A few days ago, I deleted the ACT! meeting. Last evening I did a Purge and Replace sync. This morning, even though the meeting was not in DJO, the alert sounded (i.e., although the meeting was removed, its old alert was not).

Update:

Yesterday (Friday), for the first time, the alert for my recurring M/W/F meeting worked. However, I had try 8 times before the alert would disappear. The first 7 times, it reappeared a fraction of a second later. (The first four times, I simply tried to close the alert; the remaining times, I tried to go to the event record.)

So if I am hearing you correctly the Sync issue is gone and now we are dealing with a situation where Alerts are not behaving as expected. Please correct me if I am wrong abut this.
I have a few questions so we can properly isolate this condition.
I am also assuming the same large datbase with ACT! (2000 contacts)
Are you using CompanionLink 4 build 4029?
What model iPhone/iPad and OS version are you syncing with?
Have you contacted tech support? http://www.dejaoffice.com/support_contact.html
Any recent changes to your device configuration, that might be associated with Alerts for recurring events starting to fire now?

You understood me correctly, but I realize, now, that I made a mistake.

My recurring M/W/F event did *not* alert. I had deleted the the recurring event for Friday morning. I had a different, single-occurrence event that issued the alert (you are correct that this alert behaved unexpectedly). This morning, the alert for the standard M/W/F recurring event did not appear.

Yes, same database - currently 2,054 contacts.

Yes, build 4029.

iPhone 3G, 4.2.1

Have not contacted tech support. (I came to this forum when I thought that my only issue was when the DJO version with fixed alerts would be available.

Configuration-change Q no longer germane because, as explained above, recurring-event problem not fixed.

More recent update re Alerts not behaving as expected:

This morning I had a meeting from 8:30 to 10:00 with a 30-minute alert, which sounded at the right time. Two problems, however:

1. I had to press View 11 (eleven) times before the Alert details displayed. (After a few presses, the Alert details appeared in the background; many more presses were required, however, before the close/view message disappeared so I could read the Alert details.)

2. The Alert had bad information in it (I have seen this before, but today I recorded details for the first time). I went to my phone at 8:04, four minutes after the Alert correctly sounded. The alert said it was for an event with a start time of 8:04 and an end time one hour later. As noted above, the event times actually were 8:30 / 10:00; I then went to the event in DejaCal - the times there were correct.

Latest development concerning Alerts not working properly:

This morning I had an 8 am event with a two-hour alert. Well before 6 am, I changed the alert from 2 hours to 1. The alert sounded at 6 am rather than 7 am.

When the alert did sound I tried to close it ten times, but the alert message kept coming back. On the 11th try, I selected view. I was not taken to the event, however - I was taken to the DJO home screen.

It now is pretty clear that there is a serious disconnect between DejaCal (which contains the right information from ACT!) and associated alerts (which are badly messed up).

i hope you will fix the various alert problems soon.
