Purge didn't purge -- what is wrong with my settings?

I am syncing one-way only, from Outlook into my Droid X (which just updated with 2.2 OS). I noticed my contacts were quadruplicates, which wasn't happening awhile ago, so I thought I'd fix the problem with a purge and reload. However, I still have the duplicate contacts, same as before. UPDATE. I just checked Deja Contacts, which does not have duplicates. So it the Android database that has dups, created by my Outlook sync.

I am really confused as to how to do my settings, both on the phone and on Companion Link. Could someone spell out how it is supposed to be set? I am not syncing out to Google, just from my Outlook into my phone. If I could ever get this going right, I would attempt a two-way sync, but obviously my set-up isn't ready for that.

So, what do I do in order to truly purge and reload? Do I follow the steps spelled out for grundei in this post? I don't want to lose my original phone contacts, although they are in Verizon's Backup Assistant.

Finally, I found a setting on the phone that is extra confusing to me. If I go to the Contact list, then Settings | More | Settings, I get to a screen that says "New contacts", and has two choices. There is Phone Contacts, with the word Phone below it, and Google, with my account name, below it. Google is checked. Is this correct?

Under My Accounts, for the options under my Google Gmail accounts, there are three possibilities: Sync Contacts, Sync Gmail, Sync Calendar. How should Calendar and Contacts be set?

Thanks for all help. I think this is a good product, but I'm having trouble understanding the relationships between my data, the "inner workings" of the phone data, and preventing it from going out into the internet.
