Search Function can only find complete words?

Could someone please let me know if there is a way to find a portion of a word or number in a search? Frequently I'll input a word in a task with punctuation and then DejaOffice Search (v.2.5.9 -538) won't find that particular task unless I remove the punctuation next to it. So it seems it only finds complete words or numbers, with a space before and after it.

btw - I did a search on the forums for previous submissions on this subject & the closest I could find was back from 2012 & there was no answer: http://www.dejaoffice.com/forums/showthread.php?2644
    Thanks!!

AprilW5, I'm not seeing this problem. Can you explain further

    1. What field do you have theentry with punctuation; Subject, Note or another field

    2. Using the search on top? Or another search?

When I try it, it finds partial words and also words with punctuation.

I'm using 3.1.1 (beta) but there are no noted changes in the search. It is finding partial words and words with trailing punctuation for me.

Funny thing is this "Search Issue" has been bothering me for a long time and I thought the issue was consistent. BUT now as I test the Search out more, I see it usually does find partial words, but NOT ALWAYS.

My following examples do not actually involve quotes, I only put quotes to make a search criteria stand out...

      1. The Field: the subject of a task. Example: "B: go to store" & if I search for "B", it finds a lot of partial words with a "B", but none of my tasks that start with "B:" (or "C:", for that matter.)

      2. I use the Search on the top of Today screen, clicking on the magnifying glass, then press "GO" if needed. Now I'm playing around with this Search more. If I don't press GO (on the "keyboard"), it finds "B:" ONLY if I input B with a colon and NOT if I only search for "B" alone. It's wierd. For a very long time, I couldn't get a search result on "Gro:" so I finally removed the colon so I could find it. Now since I posted this question to the forum, I added the colon back to the Task and NOW it finds it!! Ugh, something's fishy here...

Is there a re-indexing that can be done due to maybe my indexing being out of whack? I have 506 Contacts, 315 Calendar events, 112 Tasks, 59 Memos

Task settings= Search: Subject & Notes & Search Completed records.

I thought I responded to this a day ago but since I don't see my response, I'll post it again.

        1. An example of the field to search is a Task. Example: B: Grocery Shop.
        2. I'm using the Search on top. I can see my task i'm searching for below. If i don't get enough results, i'll press GO on the software keyboard on the cell phone.

It doesn't find C: test task either. But if I search with the colon attached to the B or C i get the results.

This used to happen with another task that had Gro:eggs but I removed the colon so I could Search the task. Since posting this question, I've been paying attention more closely and testing scenarios. I've added back the colon after Gro and now I CAN find GRO: without using the colon in the search! Also I can find many other partial searches that I didn't realize i could before. So the Search Issue is inconsistent not absolute.

Is there a way to re-index the database in case mine is corrupted?

I synch to Outlook. I have some 500 contacts, 300 calendar entries, 110 tasks, 60 Memos.
Search settings are Subject and Notes & Search Completed records.

        Any ideas? Thanks.

            Here is from the developer:

If the user does not press that “Go” button, it only shows matches if the user types in 2 characters or more. So typing in just “B” won’t find anything since it is less than 2 characters, but “B:” is 2 characters so it will run the search at that point.

If the user hits the “Go” button it will run the search even with only 1 character.

This 2 character requirement is because 1 character will likely find almost all records in the db. - The lookup would be too slow to run on just a single character.
            ***

So it looks like the key is to try typing 2 characters when searching, or one character and Enter.

Terrific. Thank you. That solves one of the issues with Searching.

HOWEVER, I found another search issue. If I start a task with an asterisk, it cannot find the task through a search unless I include the asterisk in the search. Ex: *Grocery. Search on Gro & not found but if search on *Gro, it finds it.
