    Java 8 and CompanionLink

I've been using DejaOffice on my Android phone and syncing to the Palm version of Pimlical Desktop using CompanionLink. This has required me to use Java 7 rather than Java 8. I've become concerned about Java 7 vulnerabilities and would like to switch to v. 8. (This will mean I can no longer keep my old Palm Tungsten E2 up-to-date, but I can live with that.) I've searched the Pimlical forum for advice on how to make the transition, and there was some suggestion that I might not be able to use CompanionLink with Java 8. Is that true?

    GinnyOL, welcome to the forums.

CompanionLink does not have any issues with Java 8 or any other versions of Java.

CompanionLink works by writing directly to Palm Desktop files, so it is compatible with any program that supports the Palm Desktop file format.

We understand that Pimlical was using some drivers to write the necessary files. We are very sad to know that starting with Java 8, Pimlical can no longer support the Palm Compatibility which is required for us to read and write the data. Basically if you can't update your Palm E2, then it can't update the Palm Desktop file format that CompanionLink requires. To retain Palm compatibility requires remaining with Java 7, or switching to regular Palm Desktop as a PIM. Neither of these is a good choice.

    I apologize for the problem.

      thanks and sorry

Thanks for the clarification. I'm really sorry that's the case. I sort of understand the Pimlical decision, given that it's a product of one man doing another major job, which limits how much versatility he can program into the product. As you say, neither remaining with Java 7 or going back to Palm Desktop is a good choice for me, I'm probably going to have to switch my Android PIM, probably to Pimilical for Android, which I believe is now mature enough to try. I've liked CL and DejaOffice, but this may be my last post, probably an all-time record for short forum membership. Thanks again.
